A child has been charged with the murder of a mum and her two sons who were all killed in their home last week from single gunshot wounds.

Kassandra Sweeney, 25, her four-year-old son Benjamin and one-year-old son Mason, were found dead by police in their Northfield home in the US state of New Hampshire on August 3.

Officers made the horrific discovery while responding to a 911 call, NBC Boston reported.

Police on Thursday (local time) arrested a child in connection to the deaths, however could not reveal details about their name, age or whether they had a connection to the family, according to the publication.

The child has been charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of falsifying physical evidence.

New Hampshire Senior Assistant Attorney-General Geoffrey Ward revealed during a press conference that police were confident they had identified everyone involved.

Investigators conducted several searches for evidence in nearby areas in the week leading up to the child’s arrest.

It was not revealed if any evidence was located.

Ms Sweeney’s husband and dad to the couple’s late sons, Sean Sweeney, has described his wife “the most amazing, caring, sweetest, all around good person that anyone could ever meet” in a heartbreaking post to Facebook.

“I wanted to thank everyone for the outreach and support, while things will never be “normal” again my body finally shut down and let me get some sleep last night and I woke up feeling as “normal” as possible,” he wrote.

“My beautiful wife was the most amazing, caring, sweetest all around good person that anyone could ever meet and just how much she loved our boys. It is our job now to keep their memories alive.

“They will be forever loved and missed and forever in my heart I hope that goes for each and every other person who reads my ramblings.”

Mr Ward said last week authorities had been contact with Mr Sweeney, who had been “very cooperative and helpful in this investigation”.

“He is obviously beyond devastated as a result of these crimes,” Mr Ward said.

Obituaries have offered a glimpse into the young family from Northfield, which is home to fewer than 5000 people.
