According to The Sun US, people have been hospitalized following a ‘mass overdose’ at Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro, Illinois.

A State Department of Corrections spokesperson Naomi Puzzello revealed in a statement that some staff became ill after responding to a medical incident. She claimed it involved “individuals in custody who appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance.”

The situation unraveled on Wednesday afternoon, January 18, 2023. After an inmate showed signs of medical distress, as reported by 92.7 WMAY.

FOX 2 St. Louis reportedly described the current situation as a potential “mass overdose” between inmates. As a result, an undisclosed number of inmates received treatment at the prison.

Upon exposure to the substance, guards may have experienced sudden illness. CBS reports that 18 staff members from the Correctional Center required treatment at hospitals following the incident.

18 staff hospitalized following Graham Correctional Center incident

After responding to the incident, employees began suffering unusual symptoms. This required an urgent call for all available Narcan in the area to be sent to the state prison. Narcan is a medicine often used to counter the effects of opioid drugs.

Anders Lindall of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council, revealed their symptoms included: “Lightheadedness, dizziness, vomiting, or feeling nauseous.”

Naomi Puzzello further stated: “All staff members who may have potentially encountered the unknown substance were also sent to a local hospital, as a precaution. All staff are stable currently and many have already been discharged”

The mysterious exposure of the unknown substance has led an Illinois State Police hazardous materials team to investigate the matter. However, the substance has not yet been identified.
