Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni Jr., an American writer, critic, activist, and educator, was born on June 7, 1943. Her work includes poetry anthologies, poetry recordings, and nonfiction articles on subjects ranging from race and social problems to children’s literature, and she is one of the most well-known African American poets in the world. For her Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection, she has received many accolades, including the Langston Hughes Medal, the NAACP Image Award, and a Grammy Award nomination. She has also just been designated one of Oprah Winfrey’s twenty-five “Living Legends.” (29) Giovanni rose to prominence as one of the leading writers of the Black Arts Movement in the late 1960s. Her early writing, influenced by the civil rights and Black Power movements of the time, offers a powerful, militant African-American viewpoint, earning her the moniker “Poet of the Black Revolution” from one writer. She started writing children’s books in the 1970s and co-founded NikTom,Ltd, a publishing business to provide other African American women authors a platform. Her works in following decades focused on social problems, human relationships, and hip-hop. Poems like “Knoxville, Tennessee” and “Nikki-Rosa” have been reprinted in anthologies and other collections many times. Giovanni is a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech and has taught at Queens College, Rutgers, and Ohio State. She presented a chant-poem at a memorial for the shooting victims after the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007.
