Rodrygo has signed a new contract with Real Madrid until the summer of 2028.

The announcement comes after the Brazilian enjoyed a private meeting with club president Florentino Perez.

The agreement for Rodrygo’s extension, as his previous contract expired in 2025, was sealed and signed in July last year. In the new contract, the 22-year-old’s salary has been increased, just as his release clause has risen to €1billion.

This move is part of Madrid’s strategy to shield its biggest talents from the economic muscle of clubs around Europe and, more recently, Saudi Arabia.

Following the announcement of the renewals of Rodrygo today and Vinicius Junior on Tuesday, Eder Militao’s new contract until 2027, also signed last summer, will soon follow.

And, along with the centre-back, the same will happen with Fede Valverde (2028) and Eduardo Camavinga.

Madrid signed Rodrygo from Santos for €45m in 2018, adding him to their squad in 2019, when he was old enough to move to the Spanish capital.

Rodrygo – a poster boy for Madrid’s recruitment model

Rodrygo is another prime example of Madrid’s commitment to young talent, trying to sign the players with the greatest potential before their prices become too high.

In just over four seasons with Madrid, Rodrygo has won eight titles, including one Champions League, two La Liga trophies and a Copa del Rey, in which he was MVP of the final last May.

Madrid fans remember with special affection Rodrygo’s goal to force extra time in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea and, just after, his brace against Manchester City to miraculously force extra time in the second leg of the semi-final of the same edition that ended with La Decimocuarta.

The following season, 2022-2023, in which he played his first World Cup with Brazil, was the first in which Rodrygo finished among the 11 players with the most minutes (fifth, with 2,851) in the squad. This season, he is sixth, with 1,017, although he has struggled to contribute goals (two) and assists (one) in the 14 games he has played.

However, Madrid retain a lot of confidence in his abilities. A source on the coaching staff told The Athletic during the pre-season tour that this would be Rodrygo’s season and that the Brazilian would be “a cannon”.
